2014 Scrooges and Angels announced

Secretary of State Mark Hammond announced who has been naughty and nice this year with charitable giving in South Carolina on Wednesday. The 19th annual Scrooges and Angels list represents organizations that demonstrate negative and positive charitable giving in the Palmetto State. Angles received a plaque and recognition from Secretary Hammond for the percentage of their expenditures that went toward their program services. Two of this year’s ten Angles are located in the Upstate, the Clemson Free Clinic and MARYS House of Pickens. Angles were selected by review of financial records submitted annually to the Secretary of State’s Office as well as nominations from the public. To be selected as an Angel, the charity must have donated 80% or more of its total expenditures to charity. Scrooges were chosen based on a charitable organization’s failure to spend a high percentage of its total expenditures on charitable programs. None of this year’s ten Scrooges does work in the tri-county area of Upstate South Carolina.
