22 Flu Deaths reported in SC

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reports at least 22 people have died from influenza in South Carolina since the fall. That compares with a single death in the last flu season.  DHEC announces two of those 22 flu related deaths have occurred in Oconee County.  Nineteen of the deaths have involved people at least 65 years of age, two victims were between 50 and 64 years of age and one was a 4-year-old.  Health officials say a flu shot is the best defense from the illness.  Officials also encourage proactive steps such as frequent hand washing, using hand sanitizer and avoiding contact between your hands and your face to avoid catching the flu.
