Accessibility highlights need for New Libraries in OC

Improved access to libraries for disabled individuals in Oconee County is one major reason existing facilities need renovation. Whether it be the elderly or the disabled, Oconee County needs facilities that can be accessed, says Oconee County Branch Services Librarian Blair Hinson. “One of the reasons that we are seeking updated facilities is just the fact that our facilities are really out of date when it comes to not just the amenities and that kind of thing, but really being able to get into the building. None of our buildings has automatic doors and none of our buildings are truly accessible. We’ve made as many accommodations as we can with the age of the buildings but it is really becoming a point where not only are our facilities out dated but they are really inaccessible.” Hinson encourages supporters to spread the word about the needs of the local libraries. “The best thing that folks can do is if they recognize the need and they feel strongly about their libraries, they should contact their county council person and other people they know in the community; spread the work to let others know that this is something that really needs to be improved. We really need to take care of all the folks in Oconee County, including those who are probably at a disadvantage anyway and desperately need to get into the library to do the things that they need to do and the buildings are really not up to being able to handle their needs.” Hinson invites the community to see first hand what the accessibility and technology needs are by visiting the libraries in Salem, Seneca, Walhalla and Westminster.
