Afternoon Walk through Historic Pendleton

A two-hour walking tour of historic Pendleton will be held on May 27 and 28. On both days, the tour leaves Hunter’s Store at 2pm, rain or shine. Along the walk, learn about the architecture and landscaping techniques used in early 19th century Up Country homes. Guests will also hear about the people who helped Pendleton grow into the social, political, and economic center of what is now Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee Counties. Some of the residents tour guide Ellen Harrison will talk about are: Ella Lorton, best friend of Floride Clemson; Bernard Bee, the man who gave “Stonewall” Jackson his nickname; the three Clement brothers, perhaps the original “Band of Brothers”; and John Miller, a successful London newspaper man, imprisoned for publishing the famous “Junius” papers, before coming to Pendleton and establishing the most western newspaper in the United States. Guests will also hear about Pendleton’s 19th century citizens buried at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and through photos, see how the historic village green and town has changed through the years. The walking tour is $7 per person and begins at Hunter’s Store, 125 East Queen Street in Pendleton. For more information about the walking tour, call 864-646-3782.
