Anderson Man Convicted on Charges from January 6 Capitol Incident

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Derek Cooper Gunby, a 43-year-old man from Anderson, was convicted on multiple charges related to the election theft protest at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The charges include one felony count of obstruction of an official proceeding and four misdemeanor counts: entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.

His actions disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election, prosecutors said. Gunby will be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Paul Friedman on March 1, 2024.
