Someone apparently tried to dynamite a 40-year old granite monument in Elbert County, Georgia—known as the Georgia Guidestones.

The early morning blast “destroyed a large portion of the structure” in northeastern Elbert County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

“The preliminary information indicates that unknown individuals detonated an explosive device at around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6th,” the agency said in a statement.

A report from Elbert County indicates that the blast was such that people two miles away felt their homes shaking. An active “police situation” there has led the Georgia DOT to temporarily close SR-177 between milepost marker 17.5 and 18. The road has been partially re-opened to ease traffic but, as the situation unfolds, may close again.

The monument was built in 1979 and was commissioned by a mysterious individual known only as “R.C. Christian”. Officials said this is not the first time that the controversial Georgia Guidestones have been vandalized.
