Black Bear Sighted in Seneca

A black bear has been sighted in Seneca, according to Mayor Pro Tem Ronnie O’Kelley. The bear was seen Wednesday evening near the Ram Cat Alley fountain and at Gignilliat Field, where a humane trap has been set. As black bears are emerging from dens in spring, they are looking for easy food in South Carolina’s coastal plains and piedmont areas.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) advises residents to secure food attractants to prevent bear visits. The key to coexisting with bears is to remove any food sources that would attract them.

SCDNR offers several suggestions, such as properly storing bird feeders and pet food, keeping garbage in tightly shut or bear-proof trash cans, cleaning grills, and protecting beehives with an electric, bear-proof fence. If camping in bear territory, keep camps clean, hang food and trash away from camp, and treat livestock feed as human food.

Remember, bears are wild animals and should be respected. If you see a black bear, report it. For emergencies, call 1-800-922-5431 or 911.
