Boaters fill OC Lakes over Holiday Weekend

Boaters, campers and just about every type of outdoor enthusiast could be seen in Oconee County over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The Golden Corner’s mountain and lakes did their job in luring visitors, explains Oconee County Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Phil Shirley. “Every campsite in our county was absolutely packed both on a state park level and the county level. The Corps of Engineer parks were also packed on the Hartwell side, so just in campgrounds that is probably 1,600 campsites in addition to those who may have rented lakefront homes or were just here for the day. So, it was a large number of people in the area enjoying the lake and enjoying the weekend.” Every type of water craft could also be seen on area lakes, adds Shirley. “Just looking out across the lake it was extremely busy with all types of watercrafts and recreation users, so it was a packed weekend.” For more information on recreational activities and lodging available in Oconee County, visit www.scmountainlakes.com.
