Paul Cain and Janet Hartman will represent Oconee County next month at the Governor’s Opportunity Zone Summit. The purpose of the January 25 meeting in Columbia is to help local communities spur economic development. Hartman serves as interim director of the Oconee Economic Alliance. County Councilman Cain represents District Three—the Seneca area. There, the Opportunity Zone program has identified two census tracts, Newry and Utica, as eligible for assistance. Both Newry and Utica lost large textile manufactujring operations during the last quarter of the 20th century, and Cain says both are in need of help. “Ms. Hartman and I will be headed down to Columbia on January 25 and hope to learn about how communities can attract investment,” Cain told 101.7/WGOG NEWS.
