Calories to appear on Restaurant Menus

The FDA announces new regulations that will require all places that sell prepared food to post calorie counts on their menus. That includes restaurant chains, convenience stores, bakeries, coffee shops, amusement parks, even vending machines. Nutritionist Marion Nestle feels people will be shocked when they see the number of calories in the food they eat. “People are going to be astounded by the number of calories in the food that they’re eating.” But do posting calories on menus actually work in getting people to cut their calorie intake? “Well it certainly works for me, when I see the calories on the muffin or piece of pizza and it seems absolutely enormous, I won’t order as much.” This should also help people with weight issues, adds Nestle. “If they don’t understand why they’re having trouble loosing weight, they will after this.” The new FDA calorie counts on menus go into effect next November.
