CDC calls new Anti-Smoking Campaign a Success

A report from the Centers for Disease Control points to success with the first federally funded national mass media anti-smoking campaign. Director of CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health, Dr. Tim McAfee says that while these graphic ads are expensive, they are worth every penny. “It is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to what the Tobacco Industry is spending on promotion.” Dr. McAfee is grateful to those former smokers who made these often-graphic ads and helped many Americans to quit smoking. “We believe that the success of this campaign is due to the 30 Americans who stood up despite the fact that they had disfigurement, that they have disability.” These often-graphic ads are very effective in getting people to quit smoking, concludes Dr. McAfee. “Over 1.5 million smokers made a quit attempt that they would otherwise not have made as a direct result of having watched the campaign.”
