Census Bureau releases 2013 Population Estimates

The U.S. Census Bureau has released the 2013 population estimates for the nation by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin. The country is getting older and more diverse, says Census Bureau Demographer Jennifer Ortman. “The American population is getting more diverse. By 2043 our national projections indicate that the non-Hispanic white alone population will represent less than 50% of the nations total.” The aging American population si driven by the Baby Boomers, adds Ortman. “Much of the aging is driven by the aging of the Baby Boomers, the youngest of which are now entering their fifties. Today, 14% of the national population is 65 and over, which is up 3.6% from 2012 and by 2030 our national projects show that one in five Americans will be 65 and over.” As they started moving into that 65 and older category, the U.S. Census Bureau expects to see our nation’s population getting older and seeing a larger share in that oldest 65 and over category.
