City of Clemson announces Major Water Projects

The City of Clemson will be replacing water and sewer lines in the near future due to problems several areas have experienced over the years. These projects will be funded with low cost State Revolving Fund loans. The project involves replaces waterlines ranging in size from 1.5 inches to 10 inches. The lines were selected based on their historical failure rate. The total footage replaced will be approximately 37,500. Water services will be replaced up to the property line, where most existing meters are located. In most cases, new meter boxes will be installed if the service has not been replaced in the past 20 years. The subtotal of the eleven selected capital line replacement projects to be funded with State Revolving Fund debt is $1,692,500. Most of the sewer lines selected for replacement was originally installed in the 1960’s when new subdivisions were built or when the original sewer system was installed in Clemson in 1963. Some sewer systems were initially private systems that were on sewerage lagoons. These sewer lines were installed using six inch clay pipe and brick manholes, which is technology no longer used today. Root intrusion along with the deterioration of the clay pipe and brick/block manholes cause many problems. The subtotal of the seven selected capital line replacement projects to be funded with State Revolving Fund debt is $1,424,000. These seven project areas are currently under plan development. These sewer lines were selected based on their historical failure rate. Survey crews started on January 13, 2014 and worked for several weeks verifying data for the existing sewer system. This project includes approximately 14,500 feet of sewer line replacement in the current line location, but with eight-inch pipe and precast manholes. During construction, service lines running to homes will be reconnected and install sewer “clean-outs” to service line will be done for customer’s convenience and inspection purposes. Customers will be directly contacted if any specific problems are encountered.
