Clemson City Council Meeting Tonight

The City Council of Clemson will hold a regular meeting tonight, August 7, 2023, at 6:30 PM. The public is invited to attend the meeting in person or watch it on the City of Clemson’s YouTube channel. One of the main topics of the meeting will be a Tax Increment Finance (TIF) overview for the Uptown Planned Development. TIF is a public financing method that uses future tax revenues to fund current improvements. The Uptown Planned Development is a mixed-use project that aims to revitalize the downtown area of Clemson. The Council will hear a presentation from a consultant who will explain the benefits and risks of using TIF for this project.

Another topic that will generate interest is a proposal for the City of Clemson to be a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. This certification recognizes communities that provide habitat for wildlife and promote environmental education and stewardship. The Council will consider adopting a resolution to support this initiative and encourage residents to create wildlife-friendly spaces in their yards.

The Council will also discuss an amendment to the Rental Housing Inspection requirements. The amendment would require landlords to register their rental properties with the city and pay an annual fee. The city would then conduct inspections to ensure that the properties meet health and safety standards. The amendment aims to protect renters from substandard housing conditions and prevent neighborhood deterioration.

Finally, the Council will review a contractual agreement for the purchase of 3 electric buses and 3 Dual Depot Chargers. The electric buses would replace some of the aging diesel buses in the city’s fleet and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs. The agreement would be funded by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration and a local match from the city. The meeting agenda also includes reports, discussions, ordinances, and other policy items.

The full agenda can be viewed on the city’s website.
