Clemson Trustees delegate responsibilities to Provost

Clemson University trustees Friday delegated powers to Provost Doris Helms to operate as chief executive of the university while President James Barker is on medical leave, effective immediately. Barker had heart surgery at Greenville Memorial Hospital Friday for a triple bypass to treat blockages discovered during a heart catheterization Thursday. It is expected he will be in the hospital, with visitation limited to family, for approximately a week, followed by medical leave for recovery. In a message to the university community, Barker said, “The doctors are pleased with my progress, but they advise that it will take some time to heal. I am beginning by rehab work, and I plan to give it my best.” A website for messages of support and encouragement for Barker can be found at http://www.clemson.edu/president/best-wishes.
