Clemson University plans Events to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Clemson University has planned several events this year as part of its 34th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. On Jan. 18, a Day of Service takes place from 8am to 1:30pm at the Hendrix Ballrooms as well as a blood drive from 10am to 3pm in Hendrix Meeting Rooms A and B. On Jan. 19, the 2016 Commemorative Service with keynote speaker Sybrina Fulton takes place at 6pm in the Tillman Auditorium. Fulton is the mother of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was shot and killed in February of 2012 while walking in a neighborhood in Sanford, Florida. The program is co-sponsored by the Chief Diversity Office. At the service, the winners of the MLK Awards for Excellence in Service will be announced. On Jan. 20, a program entitled “It Takes Courage,” featuring Leah Burgess, poet, activist and victim’s advocate takes place in McKissick Theatre of the Hendrix Student Center at 6pm. #TakesCourage is an explicit conversation rooted in the intersections of race, gender and oppression. The Minority Student Success Initiative sponsors the program. On Jan. 21, see the “Tunnel of Oppression” exhibit in Ballrooms A and B of the Hendrix Student Center from 2-7pm. The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Council on Diversity Affairs (CODA) and Healthy Campus. The final event is planned on Jan. 26 with a panel holding “open, honest conversations; bringing together law enforcement and the community.” This panel will reflect diverse perspectives from the campus and community to openly highlight concerns and share valuable information. It takes place in McKissick Theatre of the Hendrix Student Center at 6pm. Read more about these events at www.clemson.edu.
