Cold Weather Shelters Open Across South Carolina

As people across South Carolina are facing cold temperatures over the next two days, the American Red Cross is working with emergency management officials and partner agencies across the state to open shelters.

The shelters give residents, especially those without power or other heating options, a place to sleep, meals, and other services. Warming centers offer residents a place to go to stay warm and dry.

The Red Cross encourages anyone coming to a shelter to bring the following items for each member of their family: prescription and emergency medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and other comfort items. It’s also important not to forget special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, and other items for family members who have unique needs.

An easy way to find an open shelter is to download the free Red Cross Shelter Finder App. The app displays open Red Cross shelters on an easy to use map interface and is updated every 30 minutes.http://www.redcross.org/mobile-apps/shelter-finder-app.

In South Carolina, the American Red Cross, on average, responds to a disaster every four hours. Because of volunteers and financial assistance from the community, the Red Cross was able to help more than 7,000 individuals affected by disasters in South Carolina last year.
