Controlled Burns in Oconee County, SC and Stephens County, Georgia

Our day started with a sunny sky, much like yesterday. However, this is likely to change as the U.S. Forest Service is set to resume controlled burns in both Oconee County and the neighboring Stephens County, Georgia. The burns are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. today, marking the second day of the 1,600-acre burn that began yesterday near the border of South Carolina and North Carolina, around Highway 107 and the Wigington Overlook. According to a spokeswoman for the USDA’s Forest Service, a third burn was completed yesterday near the Cherry Hill Campground in Oconee. Yesterday, the afternoon sky in many parts of Oconee turned smoky due to the burns, and today’s burns are expected to carry smoke westward.
