Credit Card Skimmers Found in Anderson County Gas Pumps

Credit card skimmers were recently discovered inside gas pumps at three stations in Anderson County, according to the sheriff’s office. The skimmers, hidden inside and undetectable from the outside, can steal credit card information. Investigators said the skimmers were found scattered across the county, at gas stations on Highway 81 North, Highway 153 and East River Street, suggesting more could be present. Each device can hold 7,800 credit card numbers. The skimmers operate via Bluetooth, allowing thieves within 33 feet to download stolen information. To protect yourself, check for HC-05 or HC-06 on your phone’s Bluetooth screen at the pump, inspect the pump for tampered tape, or pay in cash. If you suspect your information has been compromised, contact your credit card company and the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
