CU Prof looks at District 1 Congressional Race

South Carolina’s First Congressional District race is heating up as we approach another primary before the final two candidates square off for the open seat.  Clemson University Political Science Professor Dr. Joseph Stewart sizes up South Carolina’s First Congressional District race.  “On the Republican side now we have gotten down from the 16 candidates to two people.  Then there were only two candidates in the Democratic Primary and Elizabeth Colbert Busch has that wrapped up.  There will be a runoff in the Republican Primary with Mark Sanford leading; he got about 35% of the vote.” Former Governor Mark Sanford will face former Charleston County councilman Curtis Bostic for the Republican nomination.  A recent poll by Public Policy Polling found Colbert Busch leading Sanford by 47 to 45%. Against Bostic, Colbert Busch is even at 43% each. The poll’s margin of error for the overall survey is +/-2.9%, and +/-3.9% for the GOP portion. Against Bostic, the poll shows Sanford with a 53 to 40% lead. If Colbert Busch wins, it would be the first time a Democrat has held South Carolina’s First Congressional District seat in over 30 years.
