Data of average SC resident has been hacked

New state numbers show the average South Carolinian has had their personal information compromised by computer hackers at least once in the past five years. The Associated Press reports that figures from the Department of Consumer Affairs show that there have been at least 7.6 million data breaches in South Carolina. That is about 1.6 breaches per state resident. The biggest breach was four years ago when someone hacked into the state Department of Revenue affecting more than 6 million people. Last year more than 626,000 South Carolinians were affected by almost 40 breaches. The total number is probably higher because agencies and companies only have to notify Consumer Affairs when hackers affect more than 1,000 people.
