DHEC Confirmed Rabid Skunk in Oconee County

DHEC confirmed that a bat found in Greenwood tested positive for rabies and a dog was exposed.

DHEC also said that a dog was exposed to rabies here in Oconee County when a rabid skunk was found in Townville near Outz Road and Dalton Gang Alley. DHEC said they were unaware of any human exposures. Both dogs are under quarantine per the South Carolina Rabies Control Act.

The bat and skunk were each submitted to DHEC for testing on March 29th, and were confirmed to have rabies the following day.

The Oconee County skunk is the first animal here to test positive for rabies this year. Out of 148 cases of rabies statewide last year, four of those were from Oconee County.
