DHEC’s COVID-19 Update

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) reported 261 additional cases of COVID-19 as of Thursday night (April 2, 2020). That brings the statewide total cases to 1,554 in all 46 counties. Unfortunately, the agency also announced five additional deaths related to COVID-19. The deaths occurred in elderly individuals who all had underlying health conditions. Two were residents of Florence County, one of Anderson County, one Horry County, and one of Sumter County. This brings the total number of deaths in the state to 31. South Carolina is now one of about a dozen states that have NOT YET issued a stay at home or shelter in place order, under which most of the nation has been placed by now. All South Carolinians are encouraged to stay home and minimize contact with people outside their households to prevent the spread of the disease. Everyone is encouraged to monitor themselves for symptoms, practice social distancing, avoid touching frequently touched items, and regularly wash their hands.
