Donate Christmas Gift to Needy Child in OC

The fifth annual Celebrate Christmas with a Hero new toy and clothing drive is underway and the community is encouraged to donate a new unwrapped toy for a needy child in the community, explains Lt. Lisa Williams with the Seneca Police Department. “All of the people that donate to our program, we couldn’t do it without them. It doesn’t matter the amount that you give, it is all appreciated, it’s all used and we try to be good stewards of that. Any that wants to donate can bring it to Seneca City Hall. If they need a tax letter, we will be glad to provide that for any donations. We do need donations, so we would like to see City Hall fill up because obviously the more donations we get the more children we can help.” Items may be dropped off at Seneca City Hall now through Dec. 20. Lt. Williams says spots still exist for assistance this year. “We still have openings, so if folks would like to apply, they can call me in my office and make an appointment. The application process takes about 45 minutes.” Celebrate Christmas with a Hero is a 501c3 tax-exempt program. The fundamental idea is that volunteers shop in advance for the children by purchasing items from Oconee County retailers in an effort to keep revenue in the community. The children are screened by an established protocol and are referred through private, governmental, clergy and others that are aware of needs, adds Lt. Williams. “We do try to help the family as holistic approach; part of our mission is independent living. So our program is a little different than just signing up for Christmas and that is part of our stewardship piece with our donors and partners.” Celebrate Christmas with a Hero gives gifts that include needs and wants from the child.
