Donation made to OC Animal Shelter

A local organization has made a donation that will help the Oconee County Animal Shelter deal with large animals at the shelter. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office announces that Partners for Animal Shelter Adoption has donated a modular barn, which was delivered to the Animal Shelter on Wednesday.  The barn, according to Lieutenant Mark Lyles of the Sheriff’s Office, cost around $7,000.  The barn will be used to help the Animal Shelter be able to safely take care of large animals, such as horses, cows, goats, and pigs. “We have diligently given the shelter $400 a month for animals that come in and are sick or injured,” according to Jean Stappler, president of Partners for Animal Shelter Adoption.  “There are five ladies who took an interest in the shelter and we decided that this was going to be our mission, to help animals who had been abused and hurt.  I knew that the Animal Shelter were getting horses turned in, so Jaimee Paul, director of the Animal Shelter told me there were 27 of them, so we felt like we needed to have a place to keep them.  Our groups, the five ladies, voted on spending the money for a barn so they could be taken care of before they were adopted.” “The problem has been that when we pick up a horse or a pig or a goat, we had nowhere to keep it here,” according to Lieutenant Lyles, whose duties include overseeing the animal shelter for the Sheriff’s Office.  “When you think of the shelter, you think of dogs and cats, but a lot of people don’t think about the cows or the horses or the pigs or the goats or the chickens.  It means a lot and I really want to thank PASA and Jean Stappler for putting this together.  When they graded it out when we started this project, the road department brought the tractors here last year and graded this spot out and we were working towards the goal of being able to house large animals here.  This is very exciting for the people of Oconee County.” For more information on the Oconee County Animal Shelter, visit their page on Facebook by looking up Oconee County Animal Shelter.
