Elementary Teachers tour Local Industries

Monday was a different kind of Teacher Work Day in the School District of Oconee County (SDOC) as elementary school teachers spent the day touring local industries, explains Dr. Sharon Sanders, Public Information Officer for the SDOC. “We called this “Educator in Industry Day.” All the certified personnel at every elementary school, that is the principals, administrators, guidance counselors and teachers, went out to tour local industries. They had schedules, they all visited at least two industries, I think one school went to three because they were very close by. This was set up through the Career Center, so we just thank Chad Lusk, the Director of the Hamilton Career Center for all his hard work on this and working with the schools. The Career Center sent a representatives with each of the school teams to help make that connection. The point of this was to address the part of the Profile of the SC Graduate put out by the state that says we are going to prepare students for careers. We realize as a district that we need to develop better relationships with local industries, they are our ultimate clients, they are who we prepare our students for, so we try to understand what it is that they need from us and what they need our students to be prepared for.” Also assisting in “Educator in Industry Day” was Oconee Economic Alliance Executive Director Richard Blackwell and his staff.
