February Kids’ Day at the AG Museum

On Feb. 28, the Pendleton District Commission will sponsor Kids Day at the “Ag” – Farming and History. The event is being held at the Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum of South Carolina, runs from 10am to 1pm, and is designed for children in grades 3-6. Admission is $4 and reservations are required since class size is limited. To make reservations, parents should call 864-207-0705. Through lectures, games, and hands on activities, students will learn how farming, throughout history, has affected events in the United States. Special emphasis will be placed on “cornerstone” inventions, especially the cotton gin and the McCormick reaper. Cotton and westward expansion and cotton and the Civil War will also be highlighted. The history of textiles will be explored by learning various techniques of weaving, like vertical weaving, weaving on an 1830 plantation loom, weaving on a cricket loom, and finger weaving. The development of the tractor will be examined and students will apply their mathematical skills by comparing a horse with a tractor and the time needed to plow 40 acres. Kids will have an opportunity to earn their Farm Hand badge, an educational program offered by the museum. Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum backpacks will also be given to students attending their first Kids Day of the 2015 season. The Bart Garrison Agricultural Museum of South Carolina is located at 120 History Lane in Pendleton.
