Federal Funding Fuels Firearm Violence Prevention Program in Pickens County

A program based in Pickens County, aimed at reducing violent injuries and firearm-related deaths, is one of five across the state to receive federal funding. The funds are provided through the Community Violence Intervention and Prevention program of South Carolina DHEC. Each award could reach up to $40,000 annually for three years, subject to performance, fund availability, and service priorities. The Clemson Chapter of “POST” — Protect Our Stolen Treasures — plans to expand a street-outreach initiative. This initiative employs peace protesters, also known as credible messengers, to mediate conflicts, prevent retaliation, and de-escalate community tensions. Yolanda Wingard, the Clemson team leader, praised Dr. Candace Brewer (Founder of the South Carolina Chapter of P.O.S.T.) for turning her personal tragedy into a mission to help others avoid similar pain. With the new funding, P.O.S.T. is expected to extend its reach and help even more people.
