Five AC Schools join UHQT

Five Anderson School District Four schools have joined the Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail. The schools, Pendleton Elementary, Mt. Lebanon Elementary, La France Elementary, Riverside Middle School, Pendleton High School and Townville Elementary participated. Students from various art classes learned about the Quilt Trail and quilt patterns from various periods of time. Students were then challenged to create their own design which represented their school. Each class then selected the design that would represent their school and participated in the painting of the panel. Additionally a fabric quilt was made which is on display in the respective schools. Volunteers from the Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail were on hand to prepare the panels and supervise the painting. The Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative installed the panels on the “Dog House” located at 403 North Elm Street in Pendleton. The “Dog House” named after the Pendleton High School mascot, was built in 1949 and cost a little over $50,000 which came from a bond issue. In an old newspaper clipping, “Red” Canup wrote that on Dec. 7, Pendleton High School’s bond-built gymnasium was opened with 600 people in attendance at a basketball doubleheader inaugural. He went on to say that Mr. Outz wanted to make sure that there was a full house so he dispatched school buses to bring in the boys and girls. Today there is interested in seeing this building becoming a community center serving the Pendleton area. Each quilt block story will be presented on the UHQT redesigned web site coming on line early September at www.uhqt.org.
