Good delayed start to School in OC

Despite the freezing cold conditions, school got off to a good start today in Oconee County. The School District decided to start on a two-hour delay, explains Assistant Superintendent of Operations Steve Hanvey. “We’ve been very pleased actually. We started our day with Dr. Thorsland visiting several schools, I visited several schools and Mrs. Hughes visited several schools to see how it was going. We had a number of parents who took advantage of the opportunity to drop the kids off at normal time even though we had a two-hour delay, but the buses ran and everybody is in there now, so it is going well.” Hanvey says that if freezing conditions warrant another delayed start this year, they may operate the same way again by opening at normal times for parents to drop off kids. “I sent an email to the principals this morning because it is something new, trying to get some feedback and so far it has been very positive. We were excited about being able to offer that and it looks like it is something we may do in the future on days where it is solely based on temperature and not ice or types of inclement weather problems.” Friday is a planned teacher workday in the School District of Oconee County, so kids do not report.
