Graham Applauds U.S. Sanctions Against Turkey

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement on news that the Trump administration will implement sanctions against Turkey following their purchase and testing of the Russian S-400 air defense system.

“I strongly support the Trump administration leveling sanctions on Turkey over the purchase and testing of the Russian S-400 air defense system. President Trump gave Turkey every opportunity to cooperate, yet they have refused. I very much appreciate Secretary Pompeo’s resolve to hold Turkey accountable.

“Turkey is an ally, although many of its actions of late have been difficult to comprehend. I hope this latest action by the Trump administration will serve as a wake-up call and a catalyst for Turkey to move away from partnerships with countries like Russia and Iran.

“I truly regret that Turkey’s leaders chose to abandon thousands of F-35 jobs and invite sanctions on an already struggling Turkish economy. There is no question that the sanctions implemented on Turkey today are the fault of Turkish officials alone.”
