Graham Statement on Jack Lew

WASHINGTON – Citing the dire situation in Israel and the need to provide stability in the region, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today voted to confirm Jack Lew to be U.S. Ambassador to the State of Israel. He was confirmed by a vote of 53-43.

“There are legitimate concerns about Mr. Lew.  However, I know from my recent travel to Israel that it is imperative the United States immediately have an ambassador in place.

“Israel’s back is against the wall and time is of the essence.  Now more than ever, the United States needs an Ambassador in Israel.

“The leaders I spoke with in the Israeli government both knew and were comfortable with Mr. Lew serving in this position.  A vote for his confirmation was not something I took lightly, but given the circumstances, I believe it is the right call.

“My position on Iran has been and remains crystal clear.

“Iran is a threat to the United States, our interests, and allies.  I will hold Iran, and its proxies, accountable for any escalation against America or our ally, Israel.  The Iranians only respect strength.  That is what the United States must project at this critical time as Israel works to eliminate Hamas terrorists.”
