Groundbreaking marks start of Infrastructure Project

Oconee County officials and community leaders gathered Wednesday for a ceremony to mark the beginning of an economic development project that will bring sewer infrastructure to the Golden Corner Commerce Park. The County has been working to provide sewer infrastructure to the industrial park since its’ acquisition in 2005 and the groundbreaking marked the start of what is referred to as the “Sewer South” project. Crews will begin the task of running nearly 13 miles of sewer lines from the Coneross Wastewater Treatment Facility in Seneca to the Golden Corner Commerce Park that sits two miles from Interstate 85 via exit 2 or 4. This construction project consists of the installation of two force main lines that will be installed side by side within the same trench and travel along SC Highway 59, Sam Brown Road, Dave Nix Road and Return Church Road, before exiting the right-of-way and entering the Coneross Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility. “This is a significant day in the history and future of Oconee County,” said Joel Thrift, chairman of Oconee County Council. “This is the catalyst this park has needed for many years and we are excited that we have a solution being put into place that will yield economic prosperity and jobs for our community.” Chairman Thrift continued by stating, “A lot of people in Oconee County deserve credit for this monumental event today and the foresight in acquiring this key industrial asset so close to the Interstate as it will yield economic growth opportunities for southern Oconee County. This sewer line extension project provides key momentum and with it, the future of South Carolina’s Golden Corner is bright.”
