GUESS WHAT? ANOTHER PHONE SCAM

The South Carolina Sheriffs Association is asking everyone to be cautious when receiving phone calls requesting donations or information on behalf of the Sheriffs’ Association. The association executive director, Jarrod Bruder, said, “Our office has been inundated with phone calls…from individuals who believe they are returning a missed phone call. Some callers are being told via a recorded message that the Association needs to verify the last four digits of their Social Security Number. Others are speaking with live individuals who ask for complete Social Security Numbers and threaten to dispatch US Marshals if they do not cooperate.” Bruder said, “It appears we are being spoofed. Our telephone number is showing up on the caller ID of these individuals, but I assure you, the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association is not making these calls. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be calling on behalf of the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association, know that it is fraudulent and hang up.” The Sheriffs’ Association operates an Honorary Membership Program, but does not solicit via telemarketing.
