Guns used more in Suicides than Homicides in SC

Statistics show almost two-thirds of all gun deaths in South Carolina are suicides. Information from health officials obtained by The State newspaper show in 2011 that 421 people committed suicide with a gun, while 251 people shot and killed someone else. University of South Carolina Suicide Prevention Services Coordinator Jennifer Myers says people sometimes overlook how often guns are used by people who want to kill themselves. The Department of Health and Environmental Control says of the 652 suicides reported in South Carolina in 2011, nearly two-thirds of them used a gun.
