Hate Crime Law Passes First Reading in Clemson

A Hate Crime law unanimously passed the first reading with the Clemson City Council last night. The ordinance would create a separate offense for biased-based crime and provide penalties. Offenders could face a fine of $500 or 30-days in jail. The court also has the option to impose an educational program or counseling.

There will be a second reading, and the public will be invited again to speak, at the next city council meeting in Clemson.
