Highway 130 closed Saturday for Transformer transfer

Planned movement of a new transformer for Oconee Nuclear Station is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 17 at 8am until around noon, closing Highway 130, also known as Rochester Highway, from Old Clemson Road to the station for the duration of the movement. The transformer, currently at the Newry railroad spur, will be stored on site at the nuclear station. Duke Energy South Carolina nuclear generation communications manager Chris Rimel gives details. “Please expect increased travel time during the road closures and make the necessary arrangements to allow for road and sidewalk blockages and the longer wait times. We understand this is frustrating for some and of interest to others, and we appreciate following the directions of the law enforcement officers assisting with the move.” Flagmen will be stationed as necessary along the route to direct traffic. This is a milestone event for Oconee County, added Rimel, and will help assure continued safe, and reliable electrical generation from the station for years to come. If weather prevents the move on Saturday, the alternate day is Sunday, Dec. 18.
