Highway Deaths Up in SC in 2014

Officials say more people died on South Carolina roads in 2014 than in 2013. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports 807 traffic deaths in 2014, which is up from 762 deaths in 2013. Of the 566 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2014, 270 were not wearing seat belts. Locally, Oconee County reported 13 highway fatalities in 2014 compared to three in 2013. Pickens County experienced 12 in 2014 and 14 in 2013. Anderson County lists 44 highway deaths in 2014 and 33 in 2013. In 2014, the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported 106 pedestrians died compared to 98 in 2013; 84 motorcyclists died compared to 125 in 2013; and 14 bicyclists died compared to 15 in 2013 on state roads and highways.
