Inmate Death at Oconee County Detention Center

On Saturday, March 30th, Michael Calvin McMahan, a 24-year-old inmate from Salem, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Oconee County Detention Center around 5:30 am. Despite the resuscitation efforts of detention deputies and EMS, he was pronounced dead at 6:21 am. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the cause of death. An autopsy was conducted on Monday, revealing that Mr. McMahan died from a blunt force head injury, consistent with an assault. His death has been classified as a homicide by Coroner Karl Addis. The investigation by SLED is ongoing.
