Junkyard Discussion by County Council & Safety Committee Tuesday Afternoon

The issue of junk littering Oconee will be addressed in a committee meeting of the county council tomorrow afternoon. Matthew Durham, the council chairman, is urging Oconee residents with an interest in a junkyard ordinance to attend the meeting, scheduled for 4:30 pm. The meeting will be held in the council chambers at Walhalla and is specifically organized by the Law Enforcement, Public Safety, Health, and Welfare Committee.

The main item on the agenda is the discussion of a proposed commercial junkyard ordinance put forth by the Planning Commission. Chairman Durham emphasized that the ordinance aims to regulate commercial junkyards and not the junk on individual properties. He is requesting the public’s review of the proposed ordinance and feedback.

The ordinance will be presented to the Law Enforcement, Public Health & Safety committee during the Tuesday afternoon meeting. The committee will have several options regarding the ordinance: they can send it as written to the full council for a vote (requiring three readings), make amendments and then forward the revised version to the full council, send it back to the Planning Commission for further revisions, or decide not to proceed with the ordinance at all.
