Kickoff of Vietnam-Era 50th Anniversary Commemoration

The first of six commemorative events to honor Vietnam-Era veterans from Oconee County has been scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at 2pm at the Gignilliat Community Center in Seneca. Dave Bertges, Henry Gordon and George White who represent the Oconee County Veterans Council have been named to head up the committee responsible for planning the events through 2017 as Oconee County pays “proper tribute” to her men and women who served our nation with courage and honor during one of its most difficult war periods (1965-1975). Jerry Dyar from the Oconee County Veterans Affairs Office who serves as the public information officer for the Oconee County Veterans Council said, “The first order of tribute for this three-year long commemoration will be an effort to again, salute thousands of men and women from Oconee who served in the military during the Vietnam War and to unveil the 50th Anniversary Flag designed by the Defense Department and presented to Oconee County”. Dyar also pointed out that the Oconee County Veterans Council is proud to have recently retired Tenth Circuit Court Judge Alex Macaulay, himself a Vietnam War veteran, as the keynote speaker. It is hoped that the Gignilliat Community Center will be filled with Vietnam-Era veterans, families, friends, and grateful Oconee County citizens at 2pm on March 28.
