Lawsuit arises from fall at State Park

A lawsuit filed this week in the Oconee Common Pleas Court alleges that a visitor to Devil’s State Park broke her left leg when she fell while walking on a paved walkway. Sister station WGOG reports that it is a damage lawsuit, filed Tuesday on behalf of Charleston County resident Beatrice Whitten, alleging negligence and recklessness by the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. According to the lawsuit, on June 11, 2013, Whitten was walking between two park villas and Lake Jocassee when “a significantly raised part” of the walkway caught her foot and caused her to fall hard on the surface. It further alleges that the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism failed to build the sidewalk in conformity with national standards. A jury trial is sought.
