Litter still a Problem in OC

In his 2015 summary on Wednesday, Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said a major problem facing the county is one in which everyone can combat, litter. “You ride the roads in our county; it is obvious that litter is a problem. We’ve got to not only have one officer dedicated to it; we’ve got to have all 90 sworn deputies in the department dedicated to fighting litter.” In 2015, Oconee County Environmental Services received 236 litter complaints, with the number of litter charges at 17; however, Sheriff Crenshaw wants that to change. “We are going to have a zero tolerance for litter. I told our staff that if they see someone litter, they get a citation that is the attitude we want.” The Sheriff’s Office participated in the Zero Tolerance for Litter campaign in 2015, which was sponsored by Palmetto Pride. The Sheriff’s Inmate Work Crew picked up approximately 5,215 pounds of litter along the county’s roadways. In addition, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office adopted a two-mile stretch of Highway 11 and picked up 72 bags of trash using employee volunteers and their family members.
