Lucas reaches 1M Steps in 86 Days

After a heart valve replacement on September 5 to correct a congenital heart defect, Oconee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Lucas has been walking to stay healthy.  As part of the rehabilitation process, Dr. Lucas explains that he has been counting his steps, active minutes, miles traveled, and floors climbed since October 22, with a pedometer.  “I reached the million step mark last week, but again, I started tracking it and kind of like with the school system, I keep up with test scores in how we are doing, so I have made tracking how much I am walking a priority.  You kind of respect what you measure, so hopefully folks are taking note that I am trying to do my best.” Dr. Lucas accomplished the million steps in just 86 days and says he feels better now than ever before.  “I get up every morning and do some walking.  I get up at about 3:30am and get on the treadmill and I feel better than I have ever felt.” The superintendent has become a role model for others in the School District of Oconee County looking to lead a healthier lifestyle.
