McConnell to speak at Steak in Oconee

One of South Carolina’s top government officials is scheduled to speak at this year’s Steak in Oconee.  To highlight the economic importance of agriculture, the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce hosts “Steak in Oconee”, a farm to table dinner featuring locally grown food. South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Glenn McConnell is a confirmed speaker this year.  Steak in Oconee takes place at 5:30pm on September 30 at the South Carolina Foothills Heritage Fairgrounds, which is located at 178 Hayfield Road in Westminster.  This is home of the fifth annual Carolina Foothills Heritage Fair, which opens the next day. Jillian Lusk, executive director of the Greater Oconee County Chamber of Commerce tells more.  “What better way to highlight our agricultural industry then to do a farm to table event.  We purchase all the food and supplies here locally.  Then we work with our local culinary students to help prepare the side dishes and everything else.  We work with the local FFA to give a scholarship because they help us work on the program and host things.  Its just going to be a fantastic event, I’m really excited.  Then of course because we get to kickoff the fair that starts a whole week of fun.  Oconee County farmers sell $133 million in products each year. Across the state of South Carolina, agriculture contributes over $2 billion to the state’s economy. And those numbers do not include the economic impact of agri-businesses that serve farmers.” Tickets to Steak in Oconee are $35 each through the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce at 864-882-2097. The Carolina Foothills Heritage Fair runs October 1st through 5th. It’s an old fashioned country fair featuring a midway with rides; livestock displays and shows; fair food: cotton candy, funnel cakes, etc.; entertainment and good ol’ fashioned fun.
