Mill Mountain Fire Update

The Mill Mountain fire in Oconee County has been burning for over a week, claiming nearly 700 acres. Despite less than a quarter inch of rain over the weekend, the fire continues to burn. As of Monday, November 13, the fire was 50% contained.

The fire management team is hopeful that the fire will reach its break lines soon, bringing it to 100% containment by the end of the week. The current response includes four fire engines, two bulldozers, and two helicopters.

A fire break line, which includes the Chattooga River, has been created around the fire. The closure of Burrells Ford campground and the section of the Foothills Trail from Burrells Ford to Big Bend remain in place. Fires and fireworks are currently banned in the Andrew Pickens Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest.

The Mill Mountain fire was detected on November 4 and had burned around 50 acres when the U.S. Forest Service sent its crews on November 5.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
