Minor Leak reported at Oconee Nuclear Station

A radioactive hydrogen isotope leaked into more than 100 gallons of water on Wednesday at the Oconee Nuclear Station near Seneca. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced Thursday that the level of tritium in the water is well below limits that would make it dangerous to drink.  The agency reports that the leak occurred during water transfer from one chemical treatment pond to another.  That is when officials spotted water seeping from the ground at the Duke Energy operated plant. Officials with Duke Energy stated that no one is at risk from the leak.
