Mountain Lakes CVB spotlights Lake Keowee

Lake Keowee was constructed in the 1960s-1970s by Duke Power Company to generate hydroelectric power. Construction of Lake Keowee resulted in flooding the ancient Cherokee settlement of Keowee Town. Prior to construction, thousands of artifacts were excavated and have been donated to the Museum of the Cherokee in South Carolina, which is located in Walhalla. Today, in conjunction with power generation, Lake Keowee offers an ideal setting for outdoor recreation. With over 300 miles of shoreline, Lake Keowee is popular for boating, fishing, water-skiing, swimming, camping, and picnicking. Lake Keowee has public boat ramps maintained by Oconee County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and Duke Energy. HGTV’s Lakefront Bargain Hunt recently did a segment on Lake Keowee called, “Kickin’ Back on Lake Keowee, SC”. It airs again on July 19 at 7pm.
