On May 4, all five municipalities in Oconee County will hold events to observe the National Day of Prayer. The county task force, comprising volunteers, has planned various activities throughout the day, and local churches will have open doors.

The day will start with the annual prayer breakfast at Seneca Family Restaurant, featuring Dr. Jim Wiggins, a retired pastor, missionary, and trustee of Southern Wesleyan University, as the keynote speaker. Several local pastors and Oconee Sheriff Mike Crenshaw will lead the prayer.

A significant event will take place at Seneca’s Shaver Recreation Center at noon, and Congressman Jeff Duncan will attend a 6 pm National Day of Prayer service at the Veterans Memorial near the Oconee County Courthouse in Walhalla.

Additionally, West Union Town Hall, Salem Town Hall, Westminster Main Street Park, and Fairplay’s Fire Department will host services throughout the day. Several industrial plant sites, Clemson University, and the Oconee and Pendleton campuses of Tri-County Tec are also planning events.

The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 and is observed on the first Thursday of May.
