National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The month of October has been designated as “National Disability Employment Awareness Month” to increase the public’s awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. Seneca Mayor Dan Alexander, who also works for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department serving Oconee and Pickens counties, recently signed a proclamation. “As Mayor of the City of Seneca, I do hereby proclaim October 2015 as “National Disability Employment Awareness Month”. The theme for this year’s NDEA Month is “My Disability is One Part of Who I Am.” Studies show that people with disabilities are vastly underutilized in our nation’s workforce, even though employers often say they have a difficult time finding qualified workers. People with disabilities have the education, training, experience and desire to be successful in the workplace. People with disabilities have many talents and abilities to offer, and employers throughout our area are finding well-prepared, qualified workers through the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). The department works to prepare and assist people with disabilities to achieve and maintain competitive employment.” Last year, more than 6,700 South Carolinians with disabilities became employed after receiving services from the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department.
